About the race

The 2XU Ocean Swim Series at Kingston Beach is a quintessential Tasmanian summer tradition, held annually to coincide with the Australia Day celebrations. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Derwent River estuary, this event captures the spirit of the 'Apple Isle'—where rugged wilderness meets the crisp, invigorating waters of the Southern Ocean. For participants, the race is more than just a physical challenge; it is a celebration of the unique maritime culture fostered by Surf Life Saving Tasmania. The event attracts a diverse field of swimmers, ranging from seasoned endurance athletes tackling the 7000m distance to local families participating in the shorter 500m and 1000m events, making it a truly inclusive community festival.

Kingston Beach itself is a historic and picturesque setting, known for its sweeping golden sands and panoramic views of Bruny Island in the distance. The water here is clean, refreshing, and typically calm, providing an ideal environment for open water enthusiasts of all levels to test their mettle. Organized by the dedicated volunteers of Surf Life Saving Tasmania, the event is renowned for its safety and professional standard, ensuring that every swimmer—from the youngest beginner to the most experienced competitor—feels supported throughout their journey. The festive atmosphere is palpable, with spectators lining the shore to cheer on the athletes as they emerge from the water. Whether you are a local or a visitor traveling from interstate, the Australia Day Swim offers an authentic taste of Tasmania’s coastal lifestyle.
