About the race
The 4th edition of the Miglio & Doppio Miglio di Quarto takes place on September 6, 2026, featuring two distinct race distances of 1852 and 3704 meters. Organized by A.S.D. Freeswimmer in collaboration with the Unione Sportiva Quarto, the event utilizes the beach at Priaruggia as its primary hub for logistics, registration, and the briefing scheduled for 11:15 AM. Participation fees range from 25 to 35 EUR, and all swimmers are required to wear the official numbered event cap. The use of a personal safety buoy is mandatory, though it is not provided by the organization. This event shares the regional waters of the Ligurian coast with the Italian Open Water Tour, which hosts its own challenge in Genoa earlier in the season.
A seascape of history and nature
As you navigate the course, the seabed beneath you is dominated by extensive meadows of Posidonia oceanica. These underwater forests, protected as a site of community interest, act as a vital habitat for local marine life, including seahorses and various Mediterranean wrasse. Looking toward the shore, the 52-meter high bell tower of the Church of San Pietro serves as an essential navigational reference point, standing as a silent witness to the area's history since the 12th century. The coastal landscape is further defined by the mouths of the Rio Bagnara and Rio San Pietro, which deliver fresh mountain water to the sea at Quinto. While the nearby Villa Spinola-Cosci marks the departure point of Garibaldi’s famous 1860 expedition, the current race focuses on the rhythmic movement between the protected shallows and the open water, where the legacy of local mariners and legendary captains feels inseparable from the maritime horizon.
