About the race
The Donauschwimmen in Neuburg an der Donau is considered Europe's largest winter swimming event. Every year on the last Saturday of January, around 2,000 daring participants plunge into the cool waters of the Danube to cover the four-kilometer stretch from the Bittenbrunn barrage to the rowing club.
The event is a colorful spectacle, with swimmers often wearing costumes and carrying imaginative watercraft. What began in 1970 as a bit of fun among eight Wasserwacht members has evolved into a significant event that attracts spectators and participants from all over Germany and Europe, traditionally opened with a salute from the Böllerschützen.
