Bodensee Dreiländerquerung 3LQ
About the race
In the early morning hours, the harbor of Lindau awakens with a distinct rhythm. Athletes gather along the shoreline, preparing for a journey that transcends national borders, a routine orchestrated by the team at Bodenseequerung®. The 3Länderquerung is a test of endurance covering approximately 34 kilometers, beginning in Germany, passing through Switzerland, and concluding in Austria. It is an annual challenge where participants follow the strict regulations of the organization, which mandate that no physical contact with support boats or crew is permitted throughout the swim. Those looking for a shorter introduction to these waters may consider the 5tartUp Bodensee Bregenzer Bucht, while those focusing on a localized challenge often look toward the Lindauer Seequerung.
## Navigating the shoreline
As you depart from the German shore, the Lindau harbor entrance sets the tone for the swim. You will pass the iconic Lindau Lighthouse, a 33-metre tall structure dating back to 1856 that features a clock on its facade. Directly opposite, the massive stone sculpture of the Bavarian Lion stands as a sentinel, marking the city's historical ties to Bavaria. Further along, you may encounter the Hoy bathing island, a small artificial structure built in the 1920s that remains a favorite local landmark for those navigating near the island of Lindau. As you head northwest, the route brings you toward the Vogelinsel bird reserve, a 600-square-metre sanctuary for local avian life situated within the 'Halde' area, where the water depth drops to 25 metres. Throughout your progress, the massive backdrop of the Austrian Pfänder mountain remains a constant, silent observer of your trajectory across the lake. The lake itself is a product of the Quaternary glaciation, shaped by the Rhine Glacier into the 'Zungenbecken' formation we navigate today. While the waters are generally calm, the history of the region includes the 17th-century 'Lake War' and mysterious Neolithic underwater stone mounds discovered on the south-west shore, reminding us that these depths hold centuries of human endeavor.
