About the race

The water here is a dynamic mix of energy and history, where the ocean surge dictates the rhythm of every stroke. As you push past the breaking waves at North Bondi, the seabed drops away, and you sense the sheer scale of the coastline that has defined local life for generations. This 5km stretch, the Bondi2Coogee 5km Swim, challenges participants to navigate a gauntlet of natural features, starting with the notorious Backpackers' Rip near the southern end of the beach. This current appears deceptively placid, yet it demands constant vigilance as you clear the sheltered waters near Ben Buckler Point. The cliffs rising to your north are a sharp reminder of the power of these tides, which in 1938 caused the largest single-day rescue event in the history of Australian surf life saving after a massive swell swept crowds into the sea.

Navigating the Coast

As you progress, the route pulls you past rocky headlands and exposed bays where the movement of the water shifts constantly. You will cross the sweep of the Bonte headland and eventually feel the southern drift as you skirt the perimeter of Wedding Cake Island. The course is monitored closely, with drone surveillance and rescue craft tracking the group to manage the interaction between the swimmers and the marine environment, including the shark nets installed to mitigate risks in these deeper channels. The swim concludes at South Coogee, passing by the shoreline where local traditions, such as the winter swimming rituals of the Bondi Icebergs Club, have long been established. This event is strictly limited to 100 participants and requires each swimmer to have a dedicated support crew on the water to ensure safety throughout the three-hour window. Whether you choose the unassisted category or utilize equipment, the crossing requires an understanding of the local currents that have shaped this stretch of the New South Wales coast since the days of the original Dharawal inhabitants.
