About the race

The Cap Naïo event in Cassis offers a comprehensive range of open water swimming distances, from a 500-meter introductory swim to a 10-kilometer endurance challenge. Scheduled for June 7, 2026, this annual meeting gathers competitors along the rugged coastline of the Calanques. The race village opens at 07:00, with staggered start times throughout the morning to accommodate varying endurance levels, starting with the 10km at 08:00 and concluding with the 500m and relay events at 12:00.

Swimming here means traversing waters that have served as a vital maritime corridor since the Roman Empire, when the port was known as 'Carsicis Portus'. As you navigate the course, the limestone cliffs framing the bay serve as a reminder of the 'Pierre de Cassis', a local stone historically quarried and transported across the Mediterranean to build the quays of ports as far as Algiers and Alexandria. The tactical nature of the course today contrasts with the military history of the bay, specifically the 1813 raid where the British Royal Navy destroyed batteries situated at the Château de Cassis to challenge French coastal defenses.

Race environment

While the maritime landscape is defined by its history, the ecosystem beneath the surface is actively managed. The Calanques include specific nursery zones where marine biodiversity is protected to support fish stock replenishment. Swimmers participating in the longer distances will experience the scale of this massif, passing near the entrance to the Grotte des Trémies, a site of significant scientific interest due to the Lower Paleolithic human remains discovered within. If you are looking for a different coastal atmosphere later in the season, you might consider the Défi de Monte-Cristo in La Ciotat, which takes place in September. Whether tackling the performance-oriented 10km or the shorter discovery distances, the event is deeply rooted in the local maritime identity, famously summarized by Frédéric Mistral’s motto: 'He who has seen Paris, if he has not seen Cassis, can say: I have seen nothing'.

How to get there

Where to stay

Cassis offers a mix of traditional fishermen's houses converted into rentals and boutique hotels located near the main port area. During early June, expect to pay between €150 and €350 per night depending on proximity to the harbor. For those preferring quieter surroundings, camping sites are available on the outskirts of the town, typically ranging from €40 to €90 per night for a pitch.

Things to do nearby

The weekend allows for exploration of the Calanques via kayak or SUP, providing access to coves inaccessible by foot. Visitors can participate in wine tastings featuring the local Cassis AOC white wines, or hike the trails leading toward the Cap Canaille cliffs. The town center also hosts small museums detailing the historical maritime trade of the region.
