Chillswim Ullswater 7.5 Miles End to End
- Jul 10, 2027
- Distance: 12.1km
About the race
In 1962, the final shift workers abandoned the Greenside Mine above Glenridding, marking the end of an industrial era that once extracted 156,000 tons of lead and 45 tonnes of silver from the earth. Before the site fell silent, researchers from the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment used the deep, abandoned tunnels to monitor seismic signals from underground nuclear tests, a strange footnote in the history of this valley. Today, the landscape is defined by the glacial depth of Ullswater, where the scars of mining have given way to the calm, seven-mile expanse of water that serves as the course for the Chillswim End to End. As you begin your swim in the shadow of the mountains, you are tracing a route that the young William Wordsworth once explored, famously recounting his own childhood mischief of fishing from a stolen boat on these very waters.
Navigating the glacial basin
The swim covers 12,070 metres, moving from the southern tip at Glenridding toward the finish at Parkfoot Holiday Park. With a maximum depth of 63 metres, the lake maintains a distinct character, requiring swimmers to navigate the length of the valley while staying within 50 metres of the shore after the first mile. You will likely pass the slopes of Glencoyne Wood, a protected SSSI area where the elusive red squirrel is still recorded, and catch glimpses of the steep scree slopes of Birk Fell on the eastern bank. The event provides six feed stations along the route, each positioned near the shore to offer support as you progress through the lake's glacial length.
Race day logistics
This annual event, now in its 7th edition, is designed for those who appreciate a sustained challenge, with a maximum pace requirement of 65 minutes per mile. The race is wetsuit-optional, with separate categories for those choosing to swim without one. Whether you are a regular in these waters or planning your first long-distance crossing, you might find the shorter, more focused nature of other local events a useful addition to your calendar; those seeking a different pacing for their season can look into the BLDSA Ullswater event held in August. The logistics are managed via shuttle buses from the race headquarters, and participants are required to use a tow-float, a standard safety measure for navigating the open waters of the Lake District.

Where to stay
The area around Glenridding and Pooley Bridge offers a range of stays, from traditional camping at the event-adjacent Parkfoot Holiday Park to local guesthouses and boutique inns. During the July peak season, expect to pay between 120 and 220 EUR per night for double occupancy in well-regarded local hotels, while basic holiday park pitches or camping pods are significantly more affordable. Early booking is advised as the village serves as a primary hub for mountain walkers and outdoor enthusiasts year-round.
Things to do nearby
Beyond the water, the region is defined by its verticality and maritime heritage. You can explore the remnants of the lead mining era through local heritage trails or head to the shores for guided kayak and SUP sessions to better understand the lake's currents. For those with energy remaining after the swim, the ascent of Helvellyn provides a panoramic perspective of the entire route you have just completed, while the lower valleys offer quiet spots for sampling regional ales after a day of trekking the surrounding fells.
