Défi de la Baie: course à la nage

- Distances: 800m and 1.6km
About the race
In 1903, the French destroyer Espingole met an abrupt end off the coast of the Côte d'Azur, sinking after running aground. While the legal battles over its salvage dragged on for over two decades, the vessel eventually surrendered to the sea, becoming a silent landmark beneath the waves. Today, swimmers entering the waters of Cavalaire-sur-Mer follow a path that brushes against this maritime history, navigating a bay whose name echoes the ancient Phoenician colony of Heraclea Caccabaria. The Défi de la Baie, scheduled for August 19, 2026, invites participants to traverse these same currents, offering distances of 800m and 1600m. As you swim, the landscape offers a clear line of sight toward the Hyères Islands, with Port-Cros and Levant serving as constant, silent companions on the horizon.
The environment and the challenge
The route is defined by the ecological significance of the surrounding coastline. To the east, the Cap Taillat promontory stands as a protected site within the Port-Cros National Park, connected to the mainland by a unique sandy isthmus. While the area is celebrated for its natural beauty, it bears the physical marks of human interference; the 1970s film production of 'La Scoumoune' left deep trenches in the landscape through the use of heavy machinery and explosives. These scars remain a reminder of the fragility of the coastal ecosystem. The region also conceals layers of Roman history, with sites like the Pardigon villas buried beneath local infrastructure, a stark contrast to the open expanse of the bay. For those looking to continue their season, the region hosts several events, including the La Croix Valmer Traversée in July, which shares the same coastal character. The competition requires participants to handle the technical aspects of open water swimming independently, with the event organized by Grimaud Tourisme. Whether tackling the 800m, which allows for an adult to accompany a youth, or the 1600m distance, the experience is framed by the bay's natural boundaries and its enduring connection to Mediterranean trade and conflict.

Where to stay
Cavalaire-sur-Mer offers a range of options, from modest seaside camping sites near the beaches to boutique hotels located along the port area. Visitors can also find traditional holiday apartments, often referred to as 'maisons de pêcheurs' by locals, which provide easy access to the water. Expect to pay between 120 and 250 EUR per night during the peak August season, depending on the proximity to Pardigon Plage. Early booking is recommended as the town fills quickly with summer tourists.
Things to do nearby
The weekend provides opportunities to explore the coastline beyond the race. You can rent a kayak or SUP to navigate the protected waters around Cap Taillat, or visit the nearby coastal paths for morning trekking with views of the islands. For those interested in local culture, the region is famous for its vineyard tastings and the remnants of Gallo-Roman archaeological sites scattered between Cavalaire and La Croix-Valmer. These activities offer a quiet way to experience the biodiversity of the Mediterranean landscape after the intensity of the race.
