About the race

In 1555, Admiral Nicolas Durand de Villegaignon established a foothold in the bay area, setting the stage for a colonial contest that would shape the region for decades. These waters, which once saw the maneuvers of French and Portuguese ships, now host the Desafio 4 Ilhas, an annual event that draws swimmers to the historic coast of Paraty. While the colonial fortifications have long since fallen into silence, the bay remains a living archive of maritime history, where participants navigate the same channels once haunted by pirates during the 18th-century gold trade. Swimmers today can choose from a range of distances, starting from 2km up to a challenging 12km, with hydration support provided at fixed 2km intervals to ensure safety throughout the endurance effort.

Nature and water conditions

This thermal comfort allows for a focus on technique rather than cold-water management. Those who find the distance of the Desafio 4 Ilhas a compelling challenge may also consider the Aloha Spirit, which operates in similar coastal conditions later in the year.

Cultural heritage on the horizon

Beyond the past. Their legacy is marked by the construction of hand-carved canoes, fashioned from single tree trunks, which have long served as the primary means of navigating these protected inlets. The race logistics, handled by A3 Sport Brasil, prioritize consistent support for all participants regardless of their chosen distance. While the history of the region is heavy with the legacy of gold shipments and maritime conflicts, the experience for the modern swimmer is one of steady, rhythmic progress through waters that have remained central to human activity for centuries.

Things to do nearby

The region invites exploration beyond the swim. You can traverse the historic 'Caminho do Ouro' on foot to witness the remnants of the colonial trade routes, or take a kayak to explore the mangrove forests and hidden coves. Gastronomy is a pillar of the local culture, with numerous distilleries offering tastings of traditional cachaça. For a deeper archaeological perspective, local guided trips to the indigenous 'oficinas líticas' provide insight into the prehistoric tool-making techniques used on the coastal rocks.
