About the race

Forty-five years of salty tradition, community spirit, and iconic WA coastline, the Freo Ocean Classic is a Fremantle summer institution. From little guppies splashing through their first taste of open water to seasoned ocean swimmers lining up for the longer courses, this event brings everyone together on the sand at Leighton Beach.

Course

50 m

A short, confidence-building ocean dip for the youngest swimmers.

150 m

A fun run-swim combo (50m run + 150m swim) that introduces kids to ocean events.

500 m

A crowd favourite, perfect for a first ocean swim or a fast, splashy hit-out around the buoys.

How to get there

Where to stay

Fremantle offers a mix of historic limestone cottages near the port and modern boutique hotels overlooking the harbor. For those preferring direct access to the coast, local holiday apartments near Leighton Beach are common. Prices typically range from $180 to $450 per night depending on proximity to the water and the level of service provided.

Things to do nearby

The area is defined by its maritime history and local food culture. Visitors can explore the Round House, the oldest public building in Western Australia, or take a short ferry trip to Rottnest Island for cycling and snorkeling. The Fremantle Markets provide access to local produce and artisan goods, while the surrounding coastline offers numerous spots for sea kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding during the summer months.
