About the race

The II Travesía La Tiñosa features four swim distances—400m, 800m, 1500m, and 3000m—held in the Atlantic waters off the coast of Puerto del Carmen. Scheduled for August 1, 2026, this event serves as the first stage of the Copa de Natación de Aguas Abiertas de Lanzarote. Participants launch from the sheltered beach of El Poril, located directly beside the Plaza del Varadero. The race entry is managed via an external platform with fees starting from 20 EUR.

The coastal landscape

Swimmers navigating this course are surrounded by the distinct volcanic geography of Lanzarote. From the water, the silhouette of the nearby island of Fuerteventura is clearly visible across the strait, providing a constant horizon line throughout the swim. To the south, the dramatic volcanic peaks of the Papagayo volcanic massif dominate the backdrop. The area is also historically tied to the 18th-century maritime trade of barilla, a plant-based export that once fueled the growth of the port of La Tiñosa. Those visiting for the race may notice the Hotel Los Fariones, a structure opened in 1967 that remains a landmark in the transformation of the original fishing village into a hub for coastal activity.

Marine life and diving

The seabed beneath the course is part of a broader network of marine zones, including the renowned diving area of Playa Chica, which features over ten distinct sites accessible from the shore. The waters surrounding the Canary Islands are a significant habitat for various cetacean species, including members of the Ziphiidae family, which are frequently monitored by local research institutions. As the race schedule aligns with the broader island swimming calendar, many athletes also participate in the XXII Travesía de San Juan earlier in the summer or head south for the Travesía Bahía Playa Blanca held in November.
