OceanMan Kyiv

Jun 26 – 27, 2027
Distances from 500m to 10km

About the race

In 1240, the Mongol army led by Batu Khan concentrated their final, devastating assault on the Lach Gates, turning the city into a site of struggle that echoed for centuries. Today, the water of the Dnieper River flows past this same ground, carrying a much different energy as swimmers prepare for the annual OceanMan Kyiv. The river, once a vital cargo route referred to as 'Sambatas' by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus in the 10th century, now serves as the stage for a modern endurance challenge.

Race day on the river

As you enter the water, you are tracing the same path that once defined the city's role as a major assembly point for ancient boat caravans. The event offers a wide range of distances, starting from a 500-meter sprint up to a demanding 10,000-meter marathon, allowing participants to choose their own level of engagement with the current. While legends tell of Saint Andrew erecting a cross on these heights in the 1st century, today’s navigation is guided by modern markers and safety support along the riverbanks. The swim takes place during the summer season, often in late June, taking advantage of the river's manageable flow and the city's historical backdrop. Wetsuit rules follow the standard international OceanMan regulations, which are clearly outlined on the event website for each category. As you swim, you may pass near the modern monument at Independence Square, where a sculpture of Archangel Michael now stands as a symbol of the city's resilience near the site of the former medieval gates.

How to get there

Where to stay

Kyiv offers a diverse range of lodging options, from high-end hotels overlooking the right bank to boutique apartments in the historic Podil district. Many participants prefer the riverfront vicinity to minimize travel time on race morning. Budget-conscious swimmers can find functional guesthouses starting around $30–$40 per night, while full-service hotels in the city center typically range from $80 to $150 per night. Choosing accommodation near the Metro line provides the most efficient access to the various start and finish points along the riverbanks.

Things to do nearby

Beyond the water, the weekend allows for deep exploration of the capital. You can book guided walking tours focusing on the medieval architecture of the Upper City or visit local craft markets for traditional ceramics. For an active recovery, the islands in the middle of the river offer kayak and SUP rentals, allowing you to see the city from a different perspective. Evenings are best spent in the historic restaurants of the old town, where local specialties like borscht and varenyky offer a genuine taste of regional culinary heritage.
