About the race

The current of the Hérault river pulls steadily against your stroke, a reminder that you are moving through a waterway defined by its volatile nature. In autumn, these banks can be submerged by floods exceeding 1,500 cubic meters per second, but today the flow is controlled, allowing you to navigate the channel toward the open sea. As you approach the transition where fresh water meets the Mediterranean, the depth shifts and the horizon expands. You are participating in the Open Swim Harmonie Mutuelle d'Agde, an event that spans distances from a 500-meter discovery course to the 5,500-meter elite crossing.

## The coastline and history Looking toward the shore, the silhouette of the Landing Memorial appears on the distant hill. Built in 1980, it stands as a sentinel above the beaches where German forces once installed anti-landing mines during the Second World War. Further along the coast, the geology shifts to dramatic volcanic basalt cliffs, the result of eruptions occurring between one million and 700,000 years ago. These dark, hardened rock formations, particularly around the Grande Conque beach, are flanked by the distinctive basalt dykes locally known as the 'Deux Frères' rocks.

## Beneath the surface The riverbed beneath you carries echoes of a much older past. It was here, in 1964, that the bronze statue known as the Youth of Agde was recovered from 1.5 meters of silt. Dated to the 2nd century BC, the statue was found in pieces, with one foot located some 600 meters from the main body, suggesting an ancient shipwreck lost to the river's currents. While you swim, you may also pass the vicinity of the Fort Brescou, an island fortress 1,500 meters offshore that served as a state prison. Between 1757 and 1773, the fort was the site of frequent, high-stakes escape attempts, with prisoners often risking the swim to the mainland with the aid of local fishermen. The event offers a unique opportunity to navigate these waters, with the long-distance categories requiring both technical precision and endurance to manage the transition from river flow to the open sea.
