About the race

Arriving in Heddesheim, the landscape shifts from industrial plains to the soft, sandy horizons of the Rhine-Neckar region. As you approach the Heddesheimer Badesee, the water emerges as a distinct, flat expanse, shielded by the surrounding vegetation of the inland dunes. This lake serves as a training ground for local endurance athletes, but in July, it transforms into a hub for the Süddeutsche Freiwassermeisterschaften. Walking down to the shore, you are stepping into a basin that sits adjacent to the Viernheim Dune ecosystem. While swimming, the contrast is stark: you are moving through water while, just beyond the perimeter, the sandy soil reaches surface temperatures that can fluctuate by fifty degrees, a micro-climate where rare wild bees and specialized beetles thrive in the heat.

Historical currents and local legends

The atmosphere here carries the weight of 19th-century political unrest. Near the race venue, the memory of Georg Friedrich Schlatter, a local pastor and key figure in the 1848/49 Baden Revolution, remains part of the town's identity; he was imprisoned for his leadership in the constituent state assembly, a reminder of the region's turbulent past. As you sight for the buoys, you might think of the local Kurpfalz heritage, represented by the golden lion and blue-and-white lozenges still carved into the town hall portal. The water itself is fed by a drainage system linked to the Kanzelbach, a river that eventually weaves its way toward the Neckar. Unlike the open rivers where currents dictate the line, the Badesee offers a controlled, predictable environment, allowing you to focus on your pace across the quadrilateral or triangular courses.

Race day logistics

Organized by the Sportgemeinschaft Heddesheim, the event hosts distances ranging from a 500m sprint to a demanding 10,000m test. For the longer sessions, you will complete multiple laps of a 1,250m loop. Wetsuit usage is strictly governed by the German Swimming Federation (DSV) regulations, which are detailed in the official technical documentation provided to all participants. Registration for the Jedermann-Schwimmen (open category) is possible on-site, provided the maximum capacity has not been met, with start numbers issued thirty minutes before your wave. Keep an eye on the water temperature via the official local monitoring station; it is the most reliable way to gauge the conditions before you enter the water.
