Travesía Salto–Concordia 2027
- Mar 13, 2027
- Distance: 5km
About the race
The Uruguay River is a colossal, sediment-rich artery that defines the border between two nations, carrying the weight of massive upstream water flow. Swimmers entering the water at the Club Remeros Salto feel the immediate pull of a river that is constantly in motion, moving with a strength that demands respect. This 5000-meter crossing is not a static pool event but a journey through a wide, open channel where the current dictates the pace. The water here is deep and carries a characteristic brownish hue from the silt it transports, creating a sensory experience where visibility is limited and the focus shifts entirely to the rhythm of the stroke and the navigation of the buoys. Entering the river requires adjusting to the flow, a constant companion that pulls you toward the Argentine shore.
Race day logistics
The event, scheduled for March 13, 2027, is defined by its international logistics. Because the race starts in Uruguay and finishes in Argentina, participants must navigate mandatory border procedures. Argentine swimmers travel via bus from Playa Los Sauces to the starting point, while Uruguayan swimmers are transported back to their home club after the finish. This complexity explains why the field is strictly capped at 310 swimmers, divided into 230 Argentine and 80 Uruguayan spots. The registration fee, set at 70,000 ARS or 1,850 UYU, covers these essential transit services, medical assistance, and the mandatory safety equipment. Wetsuits are strictly prohibited in these waters, and the use of a swim buoy or torpedo is an absolute requirement for every athlete.
The challenge
The 90-minute time limit for the 5000-meter distance is a reflection of the river's dynamic nature, requiring a consistent effort from start to finish. With no individual escort boats allowed, swimmers rely on the group support provided by the organization and the buoyed course to maintain their line. Upon reaching the finish at Playa Los Sauces in Concordia, the race concludes with a physical touch at the timing gate. The atmosphere is that of a border-crossing challenge, where the technical requirement of managing international migration documents is as much a part of the event as the swim itself. It is a singular opportunity to bridge two countries through the raw power of the river.
