About the race

The water of Baie des Citrons carries a weight beyond its warmth. While your stroke rhythm settles, it is easy to imagine the bay as it appeared in the 1940s, when it served as the bustling nerve center for the United States military in the South Pacific. Fifty thousand troops once anchored in these waters, protected from submarine incursions by a tactical perimeter of minefields and surrounding islets. Looking toward the horizon, you might spot the silhouette of the Amédée Lighthouse, a Victorian-era sentinel that has guided vessels into the Boulari Pass for over a century. This connection to the sea is deeply embedded in local life; it is the same water where Olympic talent like Maxime Grousset sharpened his skills, reflecting the city’s long history of hosting regional championships, including the Oceania events held here in 2012.

The Knock Out format

The Trophee NC Eau Libre – Knock Out demands a different kind of mental edge. You are racing on a 500-meter loop, but the challenge is defined by the attrition of the format. In the opening 1500m phase, you must secure a spot in the top 50% to move forward. The intensity peaks quickly: the semi-final departs just 10 minutes after the first finisher touches the sand, followed by the final only 5 minutes later. This rapid succession leaves little room for hesitation. If you are looking for a different pace later in the season, you might consider the Championnats de Nouvelle-Calédonie Relais 4x1250m, which offers a team-oriented alternative.

Race day logistics

As you navigate the final turn, remember that the coastline you skout or the 500m discovery race, the course remains a constant test of speed against the backdrop of one of the Pacific's most storied harbors.
