About the race

On the morning of July 25, 2026, the banks of the Weser at the Weseranger in Rinteln will begin to stir well before the first swimmers enter the water. This annual gathering is a collaborative effort by the LVM-Agentur and the local marketing association, Pro Rinteln, creating an atmosphere that balances the focus of a sporting event with the character of a long-standing regional tradition. While the event sees consistent local participation, it remains a relaxed, community-driven affair that reflects the town's enduring relationship with the river that once fueled its economy.

The river and its surroundings

As you navigate the 1,800-meter course, the landscape tells the story of the valley's evolution. To the north, the Wesergebirge ridge provides a constant, wooded horizon, reaching heights of over 300 meters. This natural barrier has defined the local geography for ages, offering a dramatic backdrop as you move downstream. The river itself was once a primary artery for trade, carrying local timber and Obernkirchen sandstone to distant markets, while bringing goods like dried fish and tobacco upstream from Bremen. Today, the water serves a different purpose, allowing participants to experience the basin from a perspective usually reserved for the historical river traffic.

Historical landmarks in view

Throughout the swim, the region's heritage remains visible from the water. You will pass through a landscape shaped by centuries of history, including the proximity to the Möllenbeck Monastery, a Benedictine foundation that predates the formal establishment of Rinteln itself. Further along the course, the skyline is punctuated by the presence of Schaumburg Castle, which stands guard over the valley from its position on the Nesselberg. Closer to the town center, the Eulenburg—a building with origins as a 13th-century residential tower—serves as a reminder of the town’s development from a fortified settlement to a regional hub. Nearby, the Doktorsee remains a focal point for local recreation, situated just west of the old town walls. The event combines this historical scenery with the straightforward, open-water experience of navigating the current, finishing with a return to the activity of the Weseranger.
