About the race

In 1775, Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala navigated these waters and charted an island he named 'La Isla de los Alcatraces'. Decades later, visitors would report that a single gunshot fired toward the island was enough to stir thousands of birds into a hurricane-like cloud of feathers and sound. Today, those same currents that once made the island a notorious prison fortress define the experience of the Bridge to Bridge Swim. While the 1962 escapees used makeshift rafts to navigate the frigid, relentless tidal pull, and John Paul Scott famously swam from the island to Fort Point, today’s participants face these same hydraulic challenges during this 10k endurance event.

## The water

Starting at the Alpha Tower of the Bay Bridge, the course utilizes the outgoing ebb tide to carry swimmers along the San Francisco waterfront. This is a technical, low-volume event strictly capped at 40 participants, ensuring a focused environment for those managing the bay's complex movement. As you track west past the Ferry Building and the dense activity of Pier 39, the water temperature remains a constant, bracing factor. The logistics of the swim are carefully managed to account for the specific tidal windows, and participants receive detailed briefings to navigate the alignment of the current. If you are seeking to build your experience in these specific conditions, you might consider the Alcatraz Open Swim, which offers a different perspective on the island’s surrounding environment.

## Race day logistics

Registration for this event is priced at $370 for members and $520 for non-members, a reflection of the intensive safety support required, including a dedicated team of kayakers who shadow the group. Because the course passes through some of the most active maritime channels in the city, the race is strictly governed by safety protocols that include mandatory cut-off times. The swim concludes at the West Bluff Picnic Area, where the Golden Gate Bridge dominates the horizon. This event is designed for those who appreciate the intersection of local history and the raw power of the Pacific-fed bay, demanding both respect for the water and a high level of preparation.
