About the race

The silhouette of the neo-Gothic Nancy Brown Peace Carillon rises above the horizon, its 98-foot tower serving as a steady navigational beacon as you make your way through the water. Below the surface, the Detroit River flows with a steady persistence, a narrow, vital artery that has defined this region since the Anishinaabe people first named it Waawiiyaataanong, or 'where the water curves around'. Long before the French arrived and solidified the name 'Detroit'—meaning 'strait'—this passage was already a central thoroughfare connecting the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence Seaway.

## The course environment As you navigate the waters surrounding Belle Isle, you are moving through a landscape shaped by both industry and history. The island itself, a 982-acre sanctuary, offers a distinct vantage point from the water, separating the main river current from the calmer zones where the event takes place. Nearby, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum holds the bow anchor of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, a somber reminder of the power inherent in these Great Lakes. The surrounding basin is notably shallow, with depths often hovering around 11 feet, though the deeper shipping channels remain the silent, dark pathways for the massive freighters that traverse this system.

## Race day details The Motor City Mile, organized by Swim Across America, brings together swimmers of all levels to support local cancer research at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center. Since its inception in 2019, the event has grown into a significant community effort. Participants can choose from distances of 0.25, 0.5, 1, or 2 miles, with the 2026 edition scheduled for July 10 at Belle Isle Beach. Registration fees scale based on the timing of entry, ranging from 50 to 200 USD. For those who find the open water daunting, the 'angel swimmer' program provides experienced support alongside participants to ensure comfort and safety.
